Throwing Down at thePeople

Over the past couple of months I’ve been making little musical babies with some of the artist in my community. I’m taking this opportunity to show them to my fam at thePeople ;)

new cam + new software =

I just got back from Puerto Rico this morning. I had high plans of blogging everyday while I was out there. Unfortunately getting robbed at gunpoint on the first day changed that gameplan quite a bit…. buuuuut that’s a whole ‘nother blog post.

What I DID do was edit the footage I shot in-between DJ sets at thePeople last month while I was on the plane!

My life is amazing…

I feel like I’ve been on a non-stop blitz of BRILLIANCE. On the up, I’ve been blessed with awesome people and experiences. On the downside, I keep missing blog beats. I’m not going to cover my awesome Easter weekend or everything I’ve done in-between, but I’ll start with Saturday night and glaze over things.

Deeper Side of Soul

I had the privilege of guest DJing at DSOS on Saturday. I hadn’t checked out my man Eric Groove in a while, but he and his folks have something good going on over there. I had fun DJing alongside him and Geo from Cardif fame. And, as usual, my man Noa put it down with a beautiful painting.

By the time all was said and done and I put the last record on I was a smiling, sweaty mess. Thanks to all the people that came out and got down with me.

Glide to brunch

The next morning I crawled out of bed and BARTed up to Glide Memorial to meet up with my darling Candida and get a lil’ church in. Afterwards we headed over to Farmer Browns to put some food in the guts. I was pleasantly surprised to find some of the Bayonics kids laying some live soul down.
Steak + Eggs + Waffles + Soul = WIN

Eddie Palmieri

After stuffing our faces we crossed the bridge and headed to the New Parish to catch the Eddie Palmieri show. I had far too much fun. I’m so glad I had the chance to catch this Latin Jazz King.
Here are the pictures I took when I wasn’t getting my wannabe salsa step on:

I spent the rest of the day enjoying friends and smiling. It felt odd to wake up early the next day and crawl to work. But hey! I’m a video game designer during the day so it just ain’t that bad! Not many people can say they make games by day and DJ by night. #Blessed
After I left the office I went out to eat at a place that had a view like this….

And then went to go check out SBTRKT at the Independent which looked like this….

Man,… not bad for a Monday!

One day

So, after totally failing on a post about how awesome the last People party was I’m going to try something new and attempt to create a blog post using nothing but my mobile devices. It’s hard for me to find the time to sit in front of the computer blogging so I have to improvise!

I decided recently to stop being the sucker on the side of the dance floor saying, “(sigh) I wish I could do that” when salsa comes on. Yes my friends, I have started taking salsa lessons whenever I can find the time. Sometimes from my friend Juan, other times from the teachers at Shattuck Down Lows salsa night. So last night after my attempt to listen to the entire Fania collection in a day (as if it would imbue my feet with salsa power) I went out dancing, and had another confirmation that it’s going to be a long and bumpy road.

A girl doesn’t know how to salsa,… Kinda cute, men eat it up.
A guy doesn’t know how to salsa,… means you can’t lead,… which means both you and your partner look like idiots.

On the positive side there were also some awesome dance performances and a delicious live salsa band. Unfortunately the battery on my camera died almost as soon as I whipped it out so I had to use the trusty iPhone.

I will do this!… minus the funny lookin’ outfit

Fela lives on

If you haven’t seen the Broadway show Fela,…. do that.
Here’s a video of last Sunday when the band decided to roll through Oakland and get down.

4 and moving forward

thePeople 4 year anniversary

thePeople 4 year anniversary

Wheeeewh,… can’t even believe it. 4 years of one of the best things that ever happened to me. Check out the dope flier that my girl cranked out…
Big love to my fam Cali, BeBrown, Amy, and HeyLove for holding down one of the dopest parties ever scene with me for 4 years strong.

Shutting it Down

Yesterday I joined thousands of people in a march from Downtown Oakland to the Oakland ports as part of the Occupy Oakland:General Strike. The goal was to shut down the 5th largest port in America to get the powers that be to pay attention, and that we did. It was truly awesome to be part of this event. I saw people of different ages, ethnicities, and walks come together to make a stand against the financial injustice being performed against the 99%. As we arrived at the port the sun was setting and I caught a few pictures.

I rode my bike back to downtown thinking that it was impossible for people to still be there, but was surprised to find a drum circle and hundreds of people. Here’s some video!

Despite what the media would have you believe this was a beautiful day. It warms my heart to see people put down their differences and stand together for something positive. It pains me to turn on the news and see them trying to twist what happened into anything less.

SBTRKT > Amazing

Last night I had the privilege of catching the SBTRKT show. I can’t begin to explain how much fun I had. 2011 isn’t over yet, but so far his album is easily my favorite album this year. Not often do I find an album I don’t mind listening to from beginning to end repeatedly.

here’s a clip of them performing my favorite song.

SF Hearts

I was out in the city taking pictures the other night when I noticed the 4 hearts in Union Square.
I’ve walked by them a gazillion times and never really looked at them.

Mark de Clive-Lowe and Sy Smith Kill thePeople

My man BLK PXLS just stitched together some moments from the last People party.
